Compost or recycle our innovative new cups
So, what's changed?
Mineral-based lining
While other single-use cups contain a plastic lining, we replaced ours with Qwarzo® coating – a mineral-based material that performs a similar function.
New paper lid
The new lid is crafted from fibre instead of plastic. To make it work, we applied the same Qwarzo® coating to the lid, so it holds its shape while you enjoy your brew.
Traceable wood fibre
Sourced from Metsä, the cups' paperboard is made of traceable fresh wood fibre from Northern European forests.
Help us keep them out of landfill
Grade A recyclability
Our new hot cup and lid can now be widely recycled in paper or mixed recycling - at home and in our stores. Check guidance from your local municipality.
Compost with your local authority
If your municipality's infrastructure supports composting of paper packaging, our new hot cup and lid can be disposed of alongside your organic waste.
Compost at home
If you have a garden compost setup, you can break down the cup into smaller pieces and add both the cup and the lid to your compost mix.

Taking care of the environment is imperative to the future of coffee and coffee farmers, and to the world we live in.
At Starbucks, we believe in the importance of caring for our planet and working with and encouraging others to do the same. As a company that relies on an agricultural product, it makes good business sense. And as people living in the world, it is simply the right thing to do.
We’re proud to be developing more environmentally friendly solutions and working hard to expand our existing programs in an effort to minimize our environmental footprint and tackle climate change.

Shifting away from single-use to reusable packaging

Expanding plant-based menu options

Plant based menu
As part of our ongoing work to expand our environmentally friendly menu options we are always exploring further innovations tailored to the markets in which we operate.

Coffee wouldn’t be possible without the farmers around the world who grow it. That’s why we work alongside them to support sustainable farming practices and their communities.
